Most of us living in South East Asia have probably owned a pair or two of local brand sneakers at some point in our lives. They may not have been what we ideally wanted, but they were Cheap, functional, bore a vaguely similar silhouette to popular models by the big brands and they were cheap. Yes, i purposely stated that twice and will say it thrice now - cheap.

The majority of people reading this probably couldn’t be paid to rock a pair of Fong Keong’s or Bata’s now, but judging by the sudden desirability of Warrior, a national gym shoe from China, who knows what the future holds.

Warrior sneakers were first released in the 70’s and are still sold today and look every bit as generic as our local “favourites”. Amazingly they have managed to end up as an in-demand fashion item in Paris of all places. Helsinki based design student, Shumeng Ye, embarked on a journey through China to document the people that wear Warrior’s. The pictures have been compiled into a book and will be sold as a package alongside a pair of Warrior’s at Colette.
