Dia de los muertos (Spanish for ‘Day of the Dead’) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico, as well as communities all over the world, that pays respect to relatives and friends that have passed away. During the festivities, held from November 1 - 2, it’s believed that the souls of the departed have an easier time in visiting their loved ones. People will usually create shrines, food and all sorts things in order to encourage them to visit.
Despite some questionable releases, the Day of the Dead has managed to become a recurring theme to be used on sneakers. This year, PUMA has unleashed the skulls (the main symbol of the holiday) on the XR Runner. The skeleton graphics on the mesh panels are complimented with a combination of tumbled and reptile-like leather, as well as some stitched details. Overall, the end result is a less cartoon-like appearance than previous attempts on the theme.
These are probably our favourite take on the theme so far, even if that isn’t saying very much. The graphic elements don’t go too overboard, colourways are decent, and the menacing looking skulls on the tongues are the icing on the cake.
The PUMA Day of the Dead XR Runner will be available at selected stockists around South East Asia later this year.
