The recent New Balance 576 China Mask event in Shanghai not only saw the official unveiling of the Wu Shuang (Chinese for one-of-a-kind) 576, but also played host to several cultural activities and modern performances that embody the “east-meets-west” qualities of the China Mask project.

For the short time it lasted, the outdoor event was akin to a funfair environment, as guests were treated to traditional handmade candy, calligraphy demonstrations, as well as Chinese Opera and mask changing performances. After that, Chinese rock band Yuguo and the b-boy team from the Caster Dance Studio came out for a more contemporary take on things.

Straight after the New Balance crew and performers took their bows, VIPs were ushered into BLING club for an exhibition of kicks and a very generous open bar tab. After initial reservations, the beasts from the east showed their true colours – and they were as sick as the ying-yang Wu Shuangs! I think i heard the open bar squealing for mercy at one point; no explanations required, we’ll let the pictures do the talking.

Stay tuned for our interview with China Mask pack designer Marco Liang and New Balance Japan Product Lifstyle Manager Tetsuya Shono, as they discuss how the project came around and their experiences working on it.

The New Balance 576 China Mask pack will be released at selected stockists throught South East Asia on August 23rd, 2008; Wu Shuang will be limited to 576 pairs, whilst the other three pairs (Jing, Mo and Shou) are general releases.
