Scion has called upon seven dynamic contemporary and internationally-recognized artists to create original artwork inspired by and in celebration of the all-new 2008 xB urban utility vehicle. The artwork will be displayed at “Want2BSquare†art shows in New York and Los Angeles, and carry the theme of squares, boxes and cubes to follow the xB’s boxy style.
The Want2BSquare art shows took place in New York on April 6th at Skylight Studios (275 Hudson Street) and will be in Los Angeles on April 21st at the Scion Installation L.A. gallery (3521 Helms Avenue, at National). Each event will also feature live DJ entertainment. Cosmo Baker and DJ Ayers from The Rub DJs will perform at the New York events, while the Los Angeles show will host DJ Ramses and DJ Denimslinger. The VIP press events the evening before each public event will also include DJ talent.,
Particapting Artists:-
· Dalek, creator of the famed Space Monkeys
· Maya Hayuk, a classic-rock-punk-folk-rainbow
· Sage Vaughn, a Los Angeles based artist
· Kelsey Brookes, scientist-turned-illustrator
· UPSO, publisher of the Art Annual “Faestheticâ€
· Freddi C, founder of the Streetwise art series
“The ‘Want2BSquare’ show is a great opportunity to blend the creative art world with the launch of the second generation xB,†said Jeri Yoshizu, Scion sales promotions manager. “Scion will continue to promote artistic creativity in special gallery executions like this.â€
Each artist was asked to paint on canvases of two square sizes, 48†x 48†and 24†x 24â€, which were then assembled into cubes that will be suspended from the ceiling at various heights throughout the gallery. Smaller cubes will display the artwork on the outside, while the larger cubes will show artwork on the inside enabling the viewer to gaze up into the artwork from directly beneath the box.
Guests will be able to meet the artists at both shows and have the opportunity to purchase the original art work. Â All proceeds from the sales will go directly to the artists.
The art shows are part of an xB pre-launch strategy anchored by the recently launched Want2BSquare.com site. The site was developed by Scion’s creative agency, ATTIK. The “square†universe is represented inside an engaging, entertaining, multidimensional web experience where visitors are encouraged to explore an expansive world, play games against other visitors, view a wealth of video content celebrating the xB’s boxy shape, and discover other quirky experiences.
Please make sure to join us for one or both of the “Want2BSquare†gallery shows this April.

About the Artists:
Dalek (James Marshall)
James Marshall / DALEK birthed the first of thousands of ‘Space Monkey’ characters on a wall in Connecticut in 1995. It was a graffiti painting off to the side of a larger work by a group of more experienced graffiti painters. Dalek and the Space Monkeys got off to a bang ten years later with the release of his second artist monograph, Dalek: Sonic Order Of Happiness, from R77 Press. He has worked with Nike Hong Kong, Adidas Germany, Converse USA, MTV Latin America, and a Nike and Kid Robot project with Barneys. He has also worked with Yo Yo Mart, a high-end children’s store in New York. Nationally, Dalek showed in 2005 at the McCaig-Welles, Clementine, and Jonathan LeVine galleries in New York; Art Prostitute Gallery in Dallas, Tex.; Merry Karnowsky in Los Angeles; and the 222 Gallery in Philadelphia.  Internationally, he showed at Magda Danysz in Paris and Le Gallery in Toronto.
Matzu (Tomokazu Matsuyama)
Matzu was born and raised in Japan. Â The young professional snowboarder-turned-artist has been featured in the pages of Vapors and Transworld Snowboarding. Â Matsuyama applies Japanese techniques and sensibility to his large scale paintings. This includes his use of Japanese calligraphy brush strokes for a reoccuring icon, the hardened countenance of a man Matsuyama calls the Reluctant Worrier, a stoic messenger who bears the troubles of an entire society. Â Matsuyama also draws from a traditional Japanese color palette and application of negative space. Together, the three elements evoke a tension and a sense of melancholy, but one that is not entirely without hope. Â Matsuyama studied at the Kuwasawa Design School in Tokyo and received his MFA from the Pratt Institute in New York, where he currently lives and works.
Maya Hayuk
Maya Hayuk makes use of an unbounded and unpredictable matrix of sources, mediums, and styles. Her relationship to the images she invents is an intricate and complex free association and a perspicacious act of unfailingly putting all the parts together to make the whole. She employs intense yet pertinent colors, complex geometries, and fine lines in order to collect the constituents that make up her present and visceral world. Her obsession with symmetry and her collection of images of mandalas, playing cards, hexes, totem poles, Ukrainian Easter eggs, quilts and bandanas play out in works that espouse the traditional as well as the innovative. There is something very classic rock punk folk rainbow peace freak out about Maya Hayuk that is very hard to put a finger on, but really it’s all about love. As if kindled by her distinguishing heart-shaped insignia signature, Hayuk’s disposition and practice eschew unpleasantries and welcome the irony and satire of real life.
Sage Vaughn
Sage has participated in a few seminal shows in his career: the Chrysalis Benefit Shows at Christie’s and Bergamot station, where his work was featured alongside legendary artists Ed Ruscha, Tobias Keene, and Mark Mothersbaugh. Recent Issues of Warped, Nylon, Juxtapoz, and PUTA magazines featured Sage “as an artist to watch.” Interscope/Geffen Records and several others commissioned his original artwork for their hottest new acts. His artwork graces the highly- visible debut album from the rock group, Rooney. Sage continues to contribute to southern California charities, including Chrysalis, the heart Project, and Los Angeles Team Mentoring. Currently, Sage lives in Silver Lake with his cat Sergeant.
Kelsey Brookes
Kelsey Brookes was born in 1978.  A formally trained scientist, he now lives and works in San Diego as an illustrator and painter. His art is an unrefined and some say unskilled mix of sex, comedy and animals…born from a true passion for all three (not always at the same time). He blames this raw, anxious form of art on the U.S. University system, which refuses to teach its scientists how to draw. His art can be found broadly throughout the U.S. and Europe on a variety of media including apparel for RVCA’s Artist Network Program, prints for Pictures On Walls and within his hand made zines he always carries in his back pocket. Kelsey’s art is represented internationally by the Lazarides gallery (London).
UPSO (Dustin Amery Hostetler)
Dustin Amery Hostetler – A.K.A “UPSO†is a graphic artist living and working in Toledo, Ohio. Born in 1977, Dustin has been exploring computer-aided art since the late 90’s. Focusing on bold colors, human narrative and a strong graphic base, his work frequently appears in galleries around the world. In addition to his fine art, Hostetler is an illustrator working with magazines such as Wired and Newsweek. He also publishes the Art Annual “Faesthetic†which is sold around the world, and has taken on the role of curator, putting together group shows in Los Angeles, Chicago and New York. Dustin runs a design studio in Toledo with his wife and frequent collaborator Jemma called Studio Sans Nom.
Freddi C
Freddi C is originally from London, England but has made Los Angeles her home for the past seven years.  Before moving to Los Angeles, she lived in New York for eight years, where she worked as an art director for a textile design company.  It was in New York that she also started painting. After exhibiting in New York, she took a break from painting completely and moved to Los Angeles.  In August 1999 she started painting a series of paintings entitled ‘Flyer Miles’.  Following the success of this series, she has been working full-time as an artist, graphic designer and curator - founding ‘STREETWISE’.  In 2003 she opened her own gallery in Los Angeles -  The Lab 101 Gallery.
