SPOTLIGHT: mi adidas

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

South East Asia may not be getting the highly desirable adidas mi Originals service anytime soon, but we were recently offered the chance to create our own kicks with the performance orientated mi adidas shoe customizing service, and found out there is plenty on offer. The simple service takes around half an hour from start to finish, and can lead to some rather interesting creations. We give you a quick recap on the process.

The customizing process is fairly straightforward. After choosing your desired model and getting a brief by the trained personnel, you are given access to a computer, where you input all your colour and material selections, which provides an instant three-dimensional preview on the choices made. After that, an electronic measuring device reads your exact foot size and feeds it to the computer, which will even give you the choice of choosing separate sizes for each foot.

After you confirm your designs and sizing, an invoice is printed and you can come back for collection three weeks later. Here’s what we managed to cough up, which we’ll describe as a clean colourway that employs a combination of nubuck, patent and normal leather. Yes, we were feeling a little Cinco de Mayo, so sue us.

The mi adidas service is now available at adidas Performance, Lot 5.01, Level 5, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur 168, Jalan Bukit Bintang, 55100 Kuala Lumpur; Tel +603 2141 8178.

SPOTLIGHT: adidas Superstar Vintage

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Some may remember the adidas x Oki-Ni Rod Lavers from a few years back, that featured all-over fish skin uppers; this new Superstar Vintage sports wolf-fish skin on the stripes, heel and tongue tag, resulting in a texture that is seldom seen on sneakers. The premium quality kicks also feature high quality nubuck on the uppers and shelltoe, along with a set of leather laces, making them one of the more classy looking Superstars in quite a while. A tasty treat indeed.

Available now at the adidas Originals store @ Pavilion KL, as well as selected stockists around South East Asia.

NEWS: adidas mi Originals

Earlier this year, adidas unveiled their ‘atelier‘ store concept in Berlin and New York, which draws inspiration from the expert craftmanship characteristics of an atelier, in order to bestow a finer sense of individuality and creativity to their originals line.

Part of the atelier experience is the mi Originals service, which allows customers to deck either the Superstar or ZX700 in colours and materials of their choice. Although adidas has been offering customizable footwear through their mi adidas service for quite some time, the kicks on offer are solely limited to their performance range.

The mi Originals service will spread to key stores in several major cities later this year, whilst customers in the United States will have access to the service through the adidas e-store. Unfortunately, there are no immediate plans to offer mi originals within South East Asia, but we’re hoping that we will have access to an atelier store sometime in the not too distant future.

Stayed tuned, as later this week we’ll be taking a look into the mi adidas service that is currently available at key adidas stores throughout South East Asia.

REPLAY: adidas x Hellboy II launch @ Originals Store, Pavilion KL

Friday, July 11th, 2008

At long last, the much talked about adidas x Hellboy II Forums and Stan Smith Mids were released yesterday to coincide with the Malaysian movie premiere of Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Although the Forums got the majority vote for the hottest colourway of the collab, the Stan Smith, being much more limited and coming with extra bells and whistles, was the one that got the crowd to queue up.

Thanks to a rather nifty queueing system, implemented with the help of the Komodo NInja crew, everyone got their kicks within half an hour of launch. To keep everyone entertained until the movie premiere, adidas brought in Malaysian graphic/comic artist Michael Chuah, of Gilamon, to work on a live Hellboy painting.

A win-win situation for all, people got tickets to watch the movie, got to see a bit of live art, and most importantly, got their shoes all within an hour - not bad for a sneaker launch. A far cry from a couple of years ago, where our scene was marred by quite a few “questionable” launches. For those that couldn’t make it yesterday, although the Stan Smiths sold out instantly, there are still some Forums available, so head over if you want a piece of hell.

SPOTLIGHT: adidas Superskates

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

A very contrasting duo from adidas indeed. The original Superskate sports a plain colourway, with royal blue stripes for an old-school feel, whilst the Superskate Street blends an all-black uppers with red accents for a more high-end like appearance. Both colouways are really sweet and will work well on the street, in a club, or just kicking around.

Available soon at selected adidas Originals stockists across South East Asia.

A TO THE Z

In what is easily the biggest collaborative project this year in sneakerdom, the adidas Consortium AZX series pulls in 26 of the world’s most influential sneaker/streetwear stores, supporters and brands, with names including Neighborhood, ACU, HUF, Crooked Tongues etc, to design a sneaker of choice from the classic ZX running range. Thankfully, Limited Edt, Singapore, just recently managed to secure a Consortium account, so you can hassle them for more info when release dates are announced.

This fall/winter season, adidas will be releasing the adi Tennis hi in some really classy looking colourways. Pictured here are the pale blue suedes, that feature an embossed criss-cross pattern, and a white leather version; both kicks have vintage soles. Seems like adidas is really trying to push the high-end, slim profile look lately - stay tuned for more.

Available at adidas Originals stockists across South East Asia in the coming months.
