SPOTLIGHT: Nike Air Max 1 Tanabata

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Nike pays homage to the Japanese star festival Tanabata with this pair of Air Max 1s. The festival celebrates the coming together of the two lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are separated by the milky way and are only allowed to meet once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. The influences can be seen on the kicks through the usage of stars on the side panels, as well as the glittery Tanabata tongue tag. Patent leather lovers will surely want to check these joints out.

Available soon at selected Nike stockists across South East Asia.

Most people have probably watched The Dark Knight by now, hands down the most anticipated blockbuster of the year and what many are saying is the best Batman film ever. As a homage to the caped crusader, Hong Kong designer/illustrator Dorophy Tang has created Batbaby, a light-hearted series of paintings that really take the dark out of the knight. Like the works that Dorophy showcased at her recent exhibition at the adidas Center in Beijing, as well as the 1000% Be@rbrick created for charity, the paintings use her signature style of traditional Chinese influences and vintage treatment.

HAPPENING AROUND: Portraits of Paradox @ Wei-Ling Gallery, KL

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Malaysian artist Yau Bee Ling returns with Portrait of Paradox, her first solo show at Wei-Ling Gallery, Kuala Lumpur. Since graduating from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1995, Bee Ling has had her works exhibited both locally and abroad. Known for combining expressive imagery with unique methods of creating texture and depth, she has garnered a repuation as one of the artists to look out for on the Malaysian arts scene.

Portaits of Paradox sees Bee Ling exploring new themes and issues, as she became a mother in 2006 and is currently juggling life as an artist, wife and mother. The works express her feelings on the superficiality of human relationships, where on a surface level people communicate well with each other, but underneath it all lies deceit, jealousy and other negative issues.

Portraits of paradox will run from 14th July - 5th august 2008 at Wei-Ling Gallery, No. 8, Jalan Scott, Brickfields, 50470 Kuala Lumpur (+603 2260 1106/7).

SPOTLIGHT: Nike Air Classic BW

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

For these Air Classic BWs, Nike have used several shades of brown, whilst applying suede, leather and a textured mesh-like material, to create additional depth. An interesting aspect are the references to minority baseball associations from the past printed on the insoles. Interesting not because we find them particularly engaging, but because we’re surprised that Nike didn’t go all out and slap pictures on the uppers, logos on the heels and random details on the tongues. Nonetheless, a rather nice release from one of the unsung heroes of the AIr Max era.

Available at selected Nike Stockists across South East Asia around September 2008.
