As mentioned previously, we said that New Balance still had a trick or two up their sleeves for the China Mask pack; next week, Streething will be out-of-office to attend a special New Balance event in Shanghai that will shed more light on the matter.

To remind us that we aren’t there for a free holiday, the guys at New Balance Singapore teamed up with Sole Obsession and Geseho to make these work shirts for us to wear during the trip. There are no plans for an actual retail release, but you never know – if there’s demand, there may be supply.

Stay tuned for New Balance event coverage from Shanghai.

ROCK WITH YAN

A launch party for a collab shirt that got stuck in Hong Kong; Scythe and NSBQ have a lot to answer for. Fortunately, even in the face of a lackluster turnout, the enthusiam of MC Yan, DJ Frankie and the whole Singapore crew never dropped for a second.

Those that turned up were treated to a graffiti installation by Yan, The Killer Gerbil, Antz and Zero; a New Balance season preview courtesy of Sole Obession; as well as a 4-way scratch/mix performance from Frankie, DJ KoFlow, DJ Rattle and DJ Tang – all ex-DMC Champs.

An aspect we think would have worked better if conducted in a smaller environment, are the workshops from Yan and KoFlow. Yan, as always, has a lot to talk about, be it what he is doing, discussing art/music techniques, or what is going on around the world – pity it didn’t go over too well on an sparsely populated dancefloor at dinner time.

Thankfully, things picked up when it was time for Yan to rock the mic, belting out some new remixes of classic tracks from his Lazy Mutha Fucka days. The mainly mandarin-speaking Singaporean crowd swamped the podium and joined Yan to sing along to some of his infamous Canto-rap chants.

After that, the ubiquitous prize giveaways kept the interaction levels up; unfortunately, when momentum was building, event time was over and the regular Ministry of Sound party crowd spilled in for their usual fix. We hear Scythe is looking to bring Yan back to Singapore sometime in the future, here’s hoping the next event will do justice to the line-up.

The Scythe x NSBQ military shirt will be made available in two weeks time at selected stockists around South East Asia and is limited to 88 pieces; Log on to Fucking Music, Yan’s music label, for free mixtape/music downloads; also check out ChinaMan Taggin’ to see more of Yan’s art.

SINGAPORE MOTOR CITY

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Over the weekend, a close-knit group of supporters and street art aficionados sacrificed a night of Singapore’s alluring nightlife and braved their way to a desolate stretch of automobile workshops for The Killer Gerbil’s first ever solo art exhibition. The collection of works, titled Family, showcased a series of portrait sketches, photographs, as well as tagged-art on canvas, license plates and even a Vespa scooter and car.

Held for less than 48 hours at Geseho Motor Works, the event was literally hot as hell, as most of the artworks were displayed inside the garage’s paint oven. Geseho is a newly established Singaporean streetwear brand, the name derives from founder Tony Tay’s – aka Lazy – father’s garage. Geseho will launch their new collection of apparel soon and are planning to hold more events to promote the local arts/creative scene within the region.

As per usual, the live graffiti installation by South East Asia’s most notorious rodent was entertaining, as was the obligatory pyromaniac celebrations that followed. Surprisingly, Sole Obsession managed to sell off all their hot dogs and buns, and unsurprising a few of us had stomach aches the day after. Only complaint of the night is that Asahi’s generous allocation of beer went almost untouched.

Tsk Tsk. That would never happen in Malaysia. So guys, when you bringing the event up here?

YEAR OF THE GERBIL

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Our man Luthfi Mustafah, aka The Killer Gerbil, will be holding Family – a solo art exhibition courtesy of Singaporean streetwear brand, Geseho. We all know Killer Gerbil as one of the premier street artists in the region. His rodent-inspired graf has been sprawled across countless surfaces, his live art installations never fail to entertain – yet this will actually be his first solo art exhibition in Singapore.

(Above: The Killer Gerbil in action at Streething’s All in the Family event)

Family will feature a mix of street art, portrait photographs as well as the ubiquitous live performance. Streething will be in town to mooch off the free beer, whilst Sole Obsession will be selling their hot dogs for SGD$1 a pop (We actually told them to charge more, but they want their devil dogs in many mouths as possible, so who are we to argue?).

Family will kick off at the Geseho Guerilla Store at 7pm on 26th April 2008, for those that can’t make it there will be a repeat screening from 1-5pm the day after – minus the booze, usual mad antics and hot dogs.

Venue: Zouk, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Get ready for a post-Valentine’s day massacre as the Streething family takes over Zouk once again. Our invited Models are not your average Kent and Barbies but of local trendsetters and influencers. It is our personal illustration of how real fashion should be represented by “REAL PEOPLE”

Music again: the Lapsap crew (DJ Blink and DJ XU) will be bringing their unique mix of funky and eclectic tunes to keep the party in an enrapture throughout the night.
