BANGDAFUCCUP: The Last ever Lapsap to be held at The Loft @ Zouk KL

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

If you didn’t now, The Loft @ Zouk KL will be gone for good as the management has decided to renovate and restructure the club this September. Replacing it is Barsonic - a new area within the building that will take all that The Loft stood for and attempt to make it bigger and better. Last night saw Lapsap hold their final ever performance at the iconic room.

Although the Lapsap movement started out in Palate Palette, and gigs at The Loft have been few and far between, most will know that it’s the place where DJ Blink and DJ XU gained most of their loyal following. Even a full day of heavy rain couldn’t stop people from jamming up the place more earlier than usual, as the troops came out in full force to support the duo. One word to describe the banging atmosphere: Militant.

You still have two chances for some eclectic electric at The Loft this week, head over here for more details.

An end of an era draws near: the same day that Malaysia celebrates it’s 51st Merdeka (Independence Day), will sadly be the same day that The Loft at Zouk KL will be permanently closing to accommodate a massive renovation. Although regular occupants Twilight Action Girl will be moved to a new area within the building - that promises to be bigger, better, louder and more banging than before - many will no doubt have fond memories of the dingy, smoke-infested room that gave a common ground for people seeking alternative music to jump around on.

As a final tribute to The Loft, Lapsap and friends will be taking to the decks on Wednesday, whilst on Friday TAG will play their final regular night with the help of live acts MUZE and Killer Calculateur. The grand finale on the 31st will see KBnL and Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill! join TAG for their final Loft night, which is guaranteed to be more packed than a tin of sardines, so y’all better come early if you want in. It also helps that early birds will be plied with free booze and goodies from Sony BMG, Universal Music and Converse.

Lapsap and Co. will be playing on August 27th, whilst the regular Friday night TAG will run as normal on August 29th, and the final ever TAG will coincide with Merdeka on August 31st. As per usual, the music starts at 10pm and doesn’t end until 3am, whilst entry is free before the clock strikes midnight.

NEWS: Fast Friday documentary

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

The fixed gear movement has enjoyed increased popularity in South East Asia over the last 18 months. Communities such as KL Fixed and BKK Fixed have been spreading the good word of riding on a bike with no brakes, and have managed to entice a cluster of curious bystanders into becoming hardcore enthusiasts. Although communities around here are still in their infancy, other cities around the world have been doing the fixie thing for quite some now.

Fast Friday is a 45-minute feature film documentary that traces the emergence of the fixed gear community in Seattle. Originally the name of a monthly event started two years ago by Dustin Klein of Cadence Clothing, Fast Friday the movie became possible when director David Rowe joined the group and started filming. Ideally, we would like the movements around here receiving such documentation as they grow.

Fast Friday is currently on a 17 city tour as part of Bicycle Film Festival, and is also available for purchase on DVD here.

NEWS: Steve Aoki Live Ibiza Essential mix for download

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Steve Aoki aka Kid Millionaire aka ‘every hipsters favourite DJ’ - the mere mention of his name around these parts is enough to cause mass hysteria. Maybe that’s taking things a bit far, but when Aoki has a gig here it’s almost guaranteed to get packed like a motherf*@*$r, and certain to get more than a bit messy when he starts jumping all over the place. Rightclicka has just put up a live mix he done before spinning in Ibiza, headover to download it. Note: Stage diving not included.

HAPPENING AROUND: Anything Goes, Anything Shows! - Earthlings @ Palate Palette, KL

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Anything Goes, Anything Shows! That would be Palate Palette’s monthly Thursday night film screening, dedicated to showing whatever tickles their fancy. It could be one of this year’s blockbusters, a classic romantic comedy, or the more independent and less commercial releases that seldom get shown here.

The next screening will be Earthlings, a a feature length documentary about our absolute dependence on animals, yet at the same time our complete disrespect for these non-human lifeforms. The film will be shown in the cozy lounge area upstairs and entry is free. The good people at Palate Palette will even provide curry and seaweed popcorn for you to munch on, what more can they do? Just remember to show some appreciation by silencing your phone once the film starts.

Earthlings will screen at 9pm, August 21st, 2008, at Palate Palette, 21 Jalan Mesui, Off Jalan Nagasari, 50200 Kuala Lumpur; T +603 2142 2148.
