NEWS: Justice ‘A Cross The Universe’ tour DVD + live CD

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Here’s a teaser of the upcoming Justice ‘A Cross The Universe’ tour DVD that will be released next month. The French electro duo of Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Auge shot to fame with their remix of Simian Mobile Disco’s ‘Never Alone Again’ back in 2006, and upon the 2007 release of their acclaimed debut album Cross, quickly became one of the genres most popular acts. Judging by this sneak preview, the DVD - directed by So Me, Romain Gavras and Justice themselves - just reeks of sex, violence and rock ‘n’ roll. We Like!

A Cross The Universe will be released on November 24th, 2008; on a side note, Simian Mobile Disco will be performing in Malaysia soon, so stay tuned for more information.

NEWS: Radio Friendly Unit Shifter mixtape for download

Monday, September 8th, 2008

For many, the 90s was the era of alternative music, a time that gave rise to some of the most memorable acts and albums in music history. Unfortunately towards the latter half of the decade, through countless bands and albums that cashed in on the new sellable sounds, what was meant to be the ‘alternative’ seemed like the only type of music around.

American streetwear brand Mishka brings us on a trip down memory lane by getting Nick Catchdubs & Mr. Ducker to produce Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, a downloadable mixtape that features 38 alternative music tunes from the 90s. The mix features classics from Nirvana, Supergrass, A Tribe Called Quest and Rage Against The Machine to name but a few.

Click here to download it, and don’t forget the secret track at the end, one of the regular fixtures of albums at the time!

WORLDWIDE FESTIVAL

Friday, May 16th, 2008

This weekend (16th – 18th of May 2008) sees Singapore play host to the musical extravaganza that is Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Festival (WWF). Boasting a truly eclectic and international line-up of live acts and DJs, Worldwide Festival will spread over 3 days and across 3 venues. Beginning with WWF Private Sessions @ Velvet Underground on the 16th, then moving on to WWF Multi-Level Sound System @ Odeon Towers on the 17th, and eventually coming to a spectacular climax at WWF Best Weekender @ Fort Canning Park on the 18th.

The WWF Private Sessions @ Velvet Underground will kick off the weekend with Gilles himself and his proteges Simbad and Garfld providing the aural entertainment. The Private Sessions will also see an undisclosed international DJ making a special appearance to add that little bit of dance-floor euphoria to the night’s proceedings. The first 200 lucky revelers to present their 2-day passes (for 17th and 18th May) will gain free entry after 10pm. Meanwhile over at the Winebar (which is open to the public), a Worldwide Collective session will also take place concurrently for those who prefer to lay back and chillout. Local collectives Dubwise and Guerilla will hold court here.

Arguably the highlight of the weekend, Odeon Towers will be transformed for one night into a heaving, multi-storey musical journey. Beginning at 9pm on the 17th and ending in the wee hours of the next morning, the main arena (the vast space that used to be premium furniture brand showroom Modliving) will feature new wave German techno pugilists Ame & Trickski, while Gilles’ current favourite Karizma will dish out deep, soulful house. Meanwhile the second arena at the basement car park will see Singapore’s very own DMC Champion DJ Inquisitive play alongside legendary turntable wizard Cut Chemist. Expect monster grooves fusing electro, dance-rock and hip-hop at this truly subterranean venue. The third and final arena will be at the quirky and offbeat surroundings of rooftop bar, Loof, where weary punters can lounge to the blissed-out sounds of local duo Cosa Nostra and a DJ set by Thai indie band Katsue.

For the grand finale, WWF will grant all ages access to the fantastic outdoor festival experience that only Fort Canning Park can provide. The appropriately named WWF Outdoor Stage and the WWF Tent will host an eclectic variety of live acts and DJs from Japanese jazz DJ Toshio Matsura and local percussion powerhouse Wicked Aura Batucada - to one of the creators of the new dance sound Diplo along with the likes of M.A.N.D.Y., Aldrin, AraByrd and many more. All these acts will provide a great build-up to the 3-hour aural and visual spectacle that is the Kruder & Dorfmeister (K&D) Experience. This Asia-exclusive show presents a special performance of the K&D duo together with high-profile MCs Earl Zinger and Ras MC T-Weed and visual mastermind VJ Fritz Fitzke. Rest assured that this line-up is sure to provide a palpable feast for the eyes, ears and mind.
