Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

A few years ago, No Comply started out as an all Australian art show that had artists use skateboards as a medium to convey their message; fast forward to today and the show has evolved into a festival consisting of 80 artists from all over the globe. The artists are given free reign to express themselves, and they do so by painting, carving, poking, glueing etc the boards to create unique art works that display influences from all facets of life, ranging from obesity to 80s cartoons.

Our long time forum member Gangster23 aka Jason was at the launch and has kindly shared some pics with us.

No Comply 2008 runs from now until the 23rd November at No Vacancy Gallery, QV. The show will also be brought to the Red Bull Gallery, Sydney, in December; for further information log on to the No Comply website.

NEWS: Visionaire 55: SURPRISE

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Art and fashion publication Visionaire have teamed up with Krug, the creators of Cuvèe champagne, for their 55th issue, titled SURPRISE. The magazine is limited to just 4,000 copies worlwide and comes in a classy purple cloth-covered case. Visionaire is available at Basheer Graphic Books, 231 Bain Street #04-19 Bras Basah Complex, Singapore, T +65 6336 0810. You can try calling other Basheer branches in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand to see if they’ll be getting any in, log on to their website for more details.

HAPPENING AROUND: 18@8 ‘Vice & Virtue’ @ Wei-Ling Gallery, KL

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

(Clockwise from top-left: Ivan Lam, Gaiking Face Open Version - Greed; Yau Bee Ling, Emerging Promises - Wisdom; Chin Kong Yee, Batu Caves - Faith)

Back once again for the fourth time, the annual 18@8 exhibition started as a showcase of 18 Malaysian contemporary artists at No.8,  Jalan Scott - known to many as the building that houses Wei-Ling Gallery. The inaugural 18@8 marked the opening of the gallery and showcased the type of artists and art that the gallery sought to promote.

Previously, the 18 artists were tasked with producing one new artwork of their choice for the show. This time around, the rules have changed quite a bit, as only nine artists were chosen and they all have been given themes that revolve around ‘Vice & Virtue’. Two of nine positive and negative attributes, that included qualities such lust, gluttony, justice and charity, were randomly allocated to the artists to work with.

The result is an incredible diverse series of artworks that would not have seen the light of day if it were not for the innovative mechanics. Be sure to check it out, as chances to see so many works by leading contemporary Malaysian artists under one roof are few and far between.

The nine participating artists are: Ivan Lam; Zulkifli Yusoff; Anurendra Jegadeva; Choy Chun Wei; Yau Bee Ling; Umibaizurah Mahir; Ahmad Shukri Mohamed; Izan Tahir and Chin Kong yee.

18@8 ‘Vice & Virtue’ will run from October 13th - November 13th, 2008, at Wei-Ling Gallery, No. 8, Jalan Scott, Brickfields, 50470 Kuala Lumpur; T +603 2260 1106/7.
