REPLAY: Dudesweet Arena @ Culture One 2009, Bangkok

Two weeks ago, us and a whole bunch of familiar faces from the local party scene spent some of our Chinese New Year holiday in Bangkok, specifically heading up for the Dudesweet Arena at this year’s Culture One International Dance Music Festival. Dudesweet recently celebrated it’s 6th anniversary of being Bangkok’s most in-demand indie/dance movement, and the arena they got all for themselves was filled up with electro from a truly diverse line-up.

Our local boys, Lapsap (DJ Blink and DJ Xu) and DJ Goldfish, performed alongside Bangkok’s Gene Kasidit, The Diet Pills, DJ Knatz, as well as AC Slater all the way from the USA. What more can we say? all we remember are the mad heavy basslines and ridiculous amounts of Bacardi buckets being passed around. Here’s the executive summary in pics – remember that there’s much more after the jump!

Also, Special thanks to the Dudesweet crew for arranging the trip for us! AND don’t miss out on The Diet Pills live in KL next week – stay tuned for more details!

SPOTLIGHT: The Nike Cortez

Friday, February 6th, 2009

cortezmain

The simple aesthetics that make the Nike Cortez so popular betray the fact that when it first hit the market in 1972, it featured breakthrough technology through the fusion of a foam midsole, flexible body and a high-gripping rubber outsole. The concept of being lightweight, flexible and having improved cushioning introduced by the Cortez would then go on to become the inspiration for all Nike Sportswear footwear and apparel.

In the 80s, it made a strong connection with the Latin youth residing in the Los Angeles area, as it was the decade that saw a large generation of Latinos being born into the United States. Their passion for an identity that fused Americana with their Latin roots made the Cortez – an American product with a Latin name – more enticing.

Some quotes:

“Everything in LA is spaced out and we would cover a lot of miles just walking so it was a comfortable choice,” Patrick Martinez, artist and graphic designer.

“It was handed down to us through our father, our brothers, our uncles.  I always wanted to wear what my family was wearing.” Estevan Oriol, director and photographer.

“There’s nothing better than busting out of a brand new Mercedes S Class CL and you got Cortezs on. It lets these people know a homie made it. It let’s people know you’re from the streets.”  Mister Cartoon, tattoo artist and illustrator.

The Cortez today stands as a symbol of what Nike as a company represents – to be revolutionary, technologically advanced, inspired by sport and absorbed by culture. Check back soon for a look at the next step in the evolution of the Cortez – the Cortez Fly Motion.

Hit the jump for more pictures.

The Nike Cortez is available now at selected Nike stockists across South East Asia.

HAPPENING AROUND: LO-FI featuring DJ set by AL Doyle (Hot Chip) @ Home Club, Singapore

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

hotchip

There seems to be some sort of UK invasion happening over in Singapore music scene lately, as in January alone we saw Mystery Jets, The Ting Tings and Kele Okereke of Bloc Party rock the island, whilst The Prodigy kick started things off for February and it was announced that the Kaiser Chiefs will be coming over in April. This Saturday, Home Club have brought in AL Doyle, of brit-electropop act Hot Chip, for a DJ set. Doyle’s actually coming in at an earlier date than expected, but like his band’s hit song, he’s definitely ‘ready for the floor’.

LO-FI featuring DJ set by Al Doyle (Hot Chip) will start at 9pm on February 7th, 2009, at Home Club, The Riverwalk, B1-01/06, 20 Upper Circular Road, Singapore 058416. Tickets are priced at SGD30 for pre-sale, and SGD35 at the door – for more information contact Home Club.
