THROUGH THE WIRE

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

If you happen to be heading over to Amsterdam anytime soon, do check out our man Sitnie’s latest art exhibition at GO Gallery. The new collection, titled UNWIRED, is Sit’s escape route from the daily grind as well as the digital art medium that he has become so well known for. Going back to basics in search of his true essence, he uses only acrylics, sprays and markers on canvas to create the works.

Unwired will run from 29th March until 12th May 2008 at Go Gallery, Amsterdam.

The popular Fresh Prince of Bel-Air television comedy made Will Smith a household name in the 90’s, and no matter how radio friendly his music is, millions of people the world over no doubt have fond memories of watching his goofy antics. PUMA will pay homage to the series with the release of two sneaker/watch packages.

The pack consists of a West Philly themed First Round/Agitation and a Bel-Air themed Clyde/Forcer. The West Philly set is meant to depict the urban culture of Will’s hometown, whilst the more luxurious looking Bel-Air package is representative of the lifestyle he experienced after moving in with his rich relatives.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air pack is scheduled to drop at selected stockists throughout South East Asia in June.

This April Fool’s Day, the much anticipated Hoods Hong Kong will officially open for business. The store is a partnership between Tetsu Nishiyama of WTAPS and Shinsuke Takizawa of Neigborhood. It is the first Hoods concept store outside of Japan and will stock both aforementioned brands. Some special items will be made available to celebrate the occasion.

On the eve of the opening, Hoods will be throwing an invite-only party with performances by Japanese surf band, Jackie & the Cedrics, and DJing courtesy of Hikaru from Bounty Hunter.

VANDAL IN DISTRESS

Nike is celebrating 1985 in a big way this year. Although the focus is on the Dunk, we have recently seen the Terminator being sanctioned with a special vintage-treated release, and now we find the Vandal being given the same honour. The mixture of weather-beaten canvas uppers and nylon tongues make these kicks insanely comfortable right out of the box.

And for all those who say they can easily get a used pair from 2003 at a flea market for cheap, we have to remind you there is distinction between being made to appear well-seasoned opposed to being totally thrashed around in. Think pre-distressed denim VS what some guy has been sweating in for 5 years.

The Vintage Vandal High is slated for a Summer 2008 drop, whilst it is not known yet if they will see a South East Asian release.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT

Although the theme for MHI’s Spring/Summer 08 collection sounds rather pessimistic, we welcome the return to our region of what we consider one of the most interesting brands in streetwear. Surprisingly, although the sub-brand to Maharishi has long been established in the UK, it has never really taken off as well as we thought it should have overseas.

Whether it be through the usage of DPM camo, collaborating with artists, or reinterpreting military garments, their collections have always been consistent and progressive. Hopefully if demand increases, we will get to see more of their extensive lineup being stocked here.

A selection of the MHI Spring/Summer 08 collection is available exclusively at Know It Nothing, Singapore.

Take cover as SBTG and Phu! have teamed up for a pack of custom kicks titled Death From Above. Taking inspiration from fighter planes, the theme for the kicks is based on a fictitious dogfight between two rival squadrons. The Death Seeker uses an AF1 as a base, whilst the Phantom Mirage employs an AM90.

Not much is known about this trio of New Balance 580 apart from the fact they are dubbed the Colour pack. Funny enough, after seeing a barrage of colourful and sometimes bizarre releases from New Balance, the simple colourways seem to stand out from the crowd.

Available at stockists throughout South East Asia from June 2008.
