PANDAS IN DISGUISE?

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Medicom Toy has teamed up with several leading contemporary Chinese artists to customize a series of 1000% Be@rbricks for an exhibition/charity auction in Beijing, China. Artists featured include Yue Minjun, Winnie Lui, Ou Yang Chun, Chen Ku and Gao Yu as well as others.

Yue Minjun plasters his signature “laughter” expression on the bear, whilst TK from Sillything utilizes carbon fiber technology as an inspiration on his design.

Excerpt from TK’s blog:

“I’ve always wanted to integrate new material & technology into a bearbrick. Here’s my original bearbrick I did for the show, using the carbon fiber technology / material used on most supercars / race cars / fighter jets nowadays.

I first mentioned this idea to Medicom about 2 years ago, but the cost seems a bit unrealistic for mass production. So i decided to make just one for this special occasion. Hopefully we could put it into production for everyone one day”.

The exhibition kicks off on 24th April 2008, Beijing, China.

STEP ON THE CRACK

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Not so long ago in South East Asia, sneakerheads were absolutely pleading with adidas to bring in more of the classic ZX running range that our global counterparts have been breaking necks with for so long. Last year, adidas finally heeded our prayers and started releasing various models from the series.

The saga continues with this pair of ZX 700, featuring an embossed “cracked” pattern on the uppers. For those that prefer the simplicity and comfort of the originals over the recent crazy-designs, keep an eye out as adidas has more than a few surprises in-store for you later this year.

Available now at adidas Originals Pavilion KL and Suria KLCC as well as selected stockists throughout South East Asia.

YEAR OF THE GERBIL

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Our man Luthfi Mustafah, aka The Killer Gerbil, will be holding Family - a solo art exhibition courtesy of Singaporean streetwear brand, Geseho. We all know Killer Gerbil as one of the premier street artists in the region. His rodent-inspired graf has been sprawled across countless surfaces, his live art installations never fail to entertain - yet this will actually be his first solo art exhibition in Singapore.

(Above: The Killer Gerbil in action at Streething’s All in the Family event)

Family will feature a mix of street art, portrait photographs as well as the ubiquitous live performance. Streething will be in town to mooch off the free beer, whilst Sole Obsession will be selling their hot dogs for SGD$1 a pop (We actually told them to charge more, but they want their devil dogs in many mouths as possible, so who are we to argue?).

Family will kick off at the Geseho Guerilla Store at 7pm on 26th April 2008, for those that can’t make it there will be a repeat screening from 1-5pm the day after – minus the booze, usual mad antics and hot dogs.

RISE OF THE ROBOTS

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Imagine a time where there are no sneaker stores, no people to pester about release dates, no holding stocks for friends and no shop assistants that judge you based on what kicks you’re rockin’. That moment may be nearing as Onitsuka Tiger unveils the first ever sneaker vending machine.

We find it highly amusing that such a concept has never been made available before, especially in Japan where you can find everything from instant noodles to adult videos being sold on the streets by the much revered robo-hawkers.

The vending machine can be found outside the Onitsuka Tiger store in Carnaby Street, London, from 14 - 16 April 2008. If you happen to be in the area, drop by to stand a chance of winning a pair of sneakers from the machine.

MADE IN THAILAND

Saturday, April 12th, 2008

Nobody talks much about Converse Thailand “exclusives”, a range of kicks that are made specifically for the Thai market due to the convenience of the factory being located in the country. The result has been heaps of varied and quality releases. Lots of crazy colours, materials as well as collabs with local designers at extremely affordable prices.

The chucks pictured here bear more than a passing resemblance to a much sought after recent release. So is Converse ripping off themselves or are they bringing high-end style to the masses?

Sorry, didn’t hear your answer, too busy licking the buttery leather on the Chuck-high’s. Available at selected Converse stockists in Thailand.
